Been There and Back
As a dentist managing medically-complex patients, I have been involved in the care of very seriously ill patients. The most interesting people that come through my clinic are always the people going for bone-marrow transplants: partially because the effects of this treatment on the mouth are definitive and profound, and thus we have a lot to offer to them, but also because the transplant is often their "last hope", and they know it.... They are often reflective and very philosophical at this juncture of their life. They've been warned about how difficult and painful the treatment will be, but also know it is their only chance.
Thankfully, far more of the patients show up after their transplant for a check-up than those that "don't show" (i.e. didn't survive the transplant).
At the end of this post-transplant appointment, I always give them a GOOHF card, and it always gets a big laugh! I explain that if anyone tells them to "Go to Hell", they can just present their card, and tell them that they've already been there!
Of course, the reality is that I probably don't even have to explain the card to most of these patients; they already know!
